Psalms 56 Bible Study

This morning, our Bible study group discussed Psalm 56. It’s likely that David wrote this psalm during the time when the Philistines captured him in Gath, as described in 1 Samuel 21:10-15. Although he was afraid for his life, David openly expressed that he chose to trust in God rather than rely on his own strength.

In verses 1-2, David begins by asking God to be merciful to him, revealing how overwhelmed and attacked he felt by his enemies. Despite his fear, he declares his trust in God's protection. He sets an example for us to follow: to praise God's word and not fear what man can do.

I reminded the group that everyone faces fear at times, but it’s crucial to keep our focus on God's promises in his word. Fear is often a tool the devil uses to intimidate us and distract us from what God can bring us through. We should not let fear—often called False Evidence Appearing Real—hinder our journey with God.

In verse 9, David further affirms his confidence, saying, "When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me!" It’s a powerful reminder that God is always with us, fighting on our side.
